By the mid 1850s, the Society had become the sixth largest insurance company in the United States and largest British insurer operating there.Difficulties arose with the New York insurance department, along with generally difficult conditions related to the American Civil War. The Society ceased most of its operations in the United States by the mid-1860s. It ceased independent operations in 1869. The Society was a party to precedent-setting litigation in the application of insurance law, most notably, Molton v. Camroux, which concerns contract law in cases of insanity.
