Philadelphia Life Insurance CO VALUABLE PAPERS Folder Antique Francis M. LEADER
This is a 10 1/2 x 5″ leatherette? folder which has VALUABLE PAPERS in gold on the front along with the following: FRANCIS M. LEADER Special Representative PHILADELPHIA LIFE INS. CO. 111 N. Broad St. PHILADELPHIA, PA. This item would be used to store the following, each in its own envelope: Receipts For Money Paid; Business Memoranda and Clippings, Life Insurance, Fire Insurance Policies, Contracts, Notes and Mortgages, Deeds, Last Will and Testament. On the back of the first envelope (the first thing you see when you open this item) is a door with steps leading up to it and above the door is “SECURITY.” At the bottom you will see “Manufactured by the Elwood Myers Company, Springfield, Ohio.” That envelope has become separated at the bottom from the rope that holds all the envelopes in place (it is still attached at the top). The envelopes are sturdier than those you see today. The one marked LIFE INSURANCE has empty slots where you can complete things like “Dividends Additions Net Costs” from the first year thru the 20th year as well as other pertinent info like–name of insured, policy number, amount, etc. The Fire Insurance Policies envelope also allows for entries like Company, Policy No., etc. The Notes and Mortgages envelope has the following written on it: “United States Saving Bonds, 1942” which puts this item to be at least 81 years old. Of course, it could be older but not used until then. The Deeds envelope has “Fire Insurance” written on it, not sure why since there was an envelope dedicated for that.
